This presentation takes up approaches used by participatory designers as a way to think about collaborative work with the communities among whom anthropologists do research. Collaborative approaches are familiar to anthropologists, particularly those who do applied, public interest, or action research. Here, we focus on the affordances of design for framing such collaborations and on identifying strategies for attuning to the interests and concerns of communities in order to be both poised and agile as codesign projects unfold.
